Hoover was orphaned as a child in rural Iowa. He was sent to live with relatives in Oregon, and later became the first student at the brand new Stanford University.

He prospered as a mining geologist and businessman. After he directed humanitarian projects in Europe and the U.S., he was elected President just months before the Stock Market crash and the Great Depression.
