The Erie Canal

People said, “You can’t make water run uphill.” They thought it would be impossible to build a canal across mountains and through wilderness.

Thomas Jefferson said it couldn’t be done. James Madison said it couldn’t be done.

But DeWitt Clinton proved them wrong. Thanks to him, the eighth wonder of the world was created. It was called the Erie Canal, and it changed America forever.

When Marty speaks about the Erie Canal, she fiddles a few Irish tunes of the era. Many canal builders were Irish immigrants. They bragged, “God made the rivers, but the Irish made the canal!”
